Willow Hall was built in 1848 by George Vail of the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, NJ. The design of the house was closely modeled on a design by Andrew Jackson Downing titled A Cottage Villa in the Bracketed Mode, and published in his 1842 book, Cottage Residences. Downing was a prominent architect of the time, and a leading proponent of the Romanticism movement. HMR prepared a Historic Structure Report for the house, including a comprehensive investigation of the history, use and its physical condition. Based on the recommendations of the report, and following damage from Hurricane Sandy, HMR prepared construction documents and supervised a roof project including the restoration of cornices and replacement of built-in gutters, flashing and slate roofing. This project received public grant funding.
