REHOBOTH BEACH, DE

Fire Control Tower #3 was one of many observation towers built during WWII that supported the coastal gun defense of Delaware Bay, riverfront manufacturing, and the port of Philadelphia. The scope of work included restoration of the concrete tower, the design of a 56-foot-high steel stair to provide access to the tower’s roof, and preservation of original access structures. The geometrically complex stair utilizes both curved and straight stair runs to avoid conflicts with the existing historic ladders that were originally used to access the tower. Other work included replication of deteriorated historic railings and ladders, new roof enclosure railings and installation of lighting and fire safety systems.
