Based on prior successful restoration projects in Jersey City, HMR was hired by the city for the restoration of the 1893 City Hall Council Chambers. Conservation work uncovered original hand painted stencils and other decorative painting schemes. Existing dark oak woodwork was stripped, restored, and refinished to its original tone. Carpeting was replaced with a historically appropriate pattern. Original stained glass windows and dome laylight were removed and restored. Historic light sconces and chandeliers were restored and modified with new energy saving light sources. Modern HVAC, audio-visual and additional lighting were sensitively integrated. This project received a Historic Preservation Award from the State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, as well as public grant funding.
