SOMERVILLE, NJ

Somerville Borough Hall, built in 1887, is a Gothic Revival structure with a large 1930s addition located at the confluence of two major roads at the north end of Main Street. HMR completed an Exterior Condition Assessment to provide an overall investigation of the exterior and make recommendations for its repair and long-term rehabilitation. Following the assessment, HMR completed a Preservation Plan and National Register Nomination. Recent construction work includes restoration of nine stained glass windows, replacement of the tower roof and restoration of the stair hall. Restoration of the vaulted ceiling at the stair hall included fabrication of cast plaster sculptural elements and recreation of decorative painting schemes, as well as implementation of a period appropriate lighting system. The stair hall restoration project received the 2014 Building Industry Network Construction Award from Preservation New Jersey. This project received public grant funding.
