JERSEY CITY, NJ

This movie palace is one of five original “Wonder Theatres” built by the Loew’s Corporation in the late 1920s. The 3000-seat Loew’s Jersey Theatre continued in use as a movie theatre until 1986, and then sat dormant for years. HMR worked with the City of Jersey City and the Friends of the Loew’s to prepare a comprehensive Historic Structure Report (HSR) for the theatre, which addressed existing conditions and laid out a plan for future work. The recommendations presented by HMR included life safety and code compliance issues, requirements for increased occupancy, technical theatre improvements, as well as recommendations for an appropriate level of historic restoration. Based on priorities established in the HSR, HMR has proceeded with egress upgrades and restoration of historic bronze entries. Also, construction documents have been prepared for new fire protection systems, new energy efficient air-conditioning systems, and restoration of exterior fire stairs. This project received public grant funding.
