With over 50,000 annual visitors, Howell Living History Farm is one of the most successful living history farms in New Jersey. Balancing the needs of the many visitors while retaining and preserving the historic fabric is a significant challenge on this project. The Henry Phillips House, an early 19th century farmhouse centrally located on the site, is a key part of the Howell Living History Farm interpretive program. HMR initially collaborated with the farm to develop the Historic Structure Report (HSR) for the house. Work included thorough historic research, complete architectural and landscape analysis, archaeology, materials analysis, systems evaluations and recommendations for future work. Based on the recommendations of the HSR, Phase 1 work involved exterior and interior restoration of the original stone wing and later kitchen addition. Phase 2 completed the exterior and interior restoration of the mid-19th century parlor wing, including accurate period wallpapers and finishes. This project received public grant funding.
