ATLANTIC CITY, NJ

Since 1905, St. Nicholas has endured the effects of the harsh coastal environment in Atlantic City, one block away from the ocean. Exterior restoration of the church sought to preserve the historic materials and respond to the challenges of this environment. Laser documentation was utilized to assure the accuracy of the base drawings, all areas were carefully surveyed from lifts to record the existing conditions. Materials testing and cleaning mock-ups were conducted to determine procedures for removal of salt deposits from soft marble column capitals. Work included replacement of terra cotta and clay tile roofing, and stained glass restoration. St. Nicholas was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This project received public grant funding.
